Financial Planning in September

September 11, 2026 | Posted by: Sherry Corbitt

For many of us, September can feel like a 2nd new year, with children returning to school and the season starting fresh. With new beginnings, it can be good to re-evaluate and create unique plans for your finances. Consider a few good financial plans you can focus on this September.

Evaluate Your Current Goals
Although most of us make our goals at the beginning of the year, it is essential to come back to these goals and see how they are doing. Check off which goals you have met for this year and which ones you are still working on. Next, determine why you haven't reached some of these goals, such as drawbacks or barriers that are in your way. Sometimes the real solution to solving this issue is to recreate the plan to make it more attainable. Doing so could mean making some changes, yet being able to do so will benefit you and help you achieve such goals. Although returning to your goals at the beginning of a new year is essential, doing so a few months before a new year can help you determine why you created them in the first place.

Budget
When we create a budget, it is typically maintained in the beginning. If there is not enough attention put on this budget, then it can begin to lose its purpose. As you evaluate your budget in September, you may notice that it has, in fact, slightly deteriorated. If this is the case, you should not give up entirely on the budget. No, putting the time and energy into restoring this budget is necessary. Find out where your budget started to go south and incorporate new methods to ensure that the same mistakes will not happen again. Double-check your budget; this may determine whether or not it is financially realistic.

Saving
We all should be trying to save in our day-to-day lives in some way. Whether you are cutting back on expenses or working towards a few savings accounts, throughout the year, you may have had some unexpected events come up, or you just were able to enjoy some traveling now that Covid has lightened. Most people may be unprepared to face next year's costs. In September, it can be wise to analyze what ways you can save for the next few months before the new year arrives. This can include creating a more sustainable spending amount, cutting back on costly parts of your life, and even finding ways to increase your income.

Monthly Fees
Monthly fees can be tricky to manage, since they can sometimes hide in our bank statements. In addition, all of us have monthly fees, whether through cable or other subscriptions. You may brush these off, yet you may not even take full advantage of some of these subscription features. You potentially may have even forgotten about a program that you subscribed to. Although this task could be completed in January, the sooner you do it, the more money you could save. If you discover that there are some programs that you either do not use anymore or do not use enough to get your money's worth, then you should consider unsubscribing. By doing this, you could save hundreds of dollars a month.

Don't wait until January to assess your financial plans. By evaluating your finances a couple of months early, you can prepare well for the new year! As always, please out to me if you have any questions regarding your mortgage needs.
